[00:00:00] Thank you for being here on what is actually a special day for our church. I don't know if the choir let you know that at all, but we are going to be in First Corinthians 12 today here in the second week of our series Mine where we are learning to see and depend on the incredible reality that everything there is is God's from him and to him. If you're a guest with us this morning, thank you so much for being here. I want you to know that you are here for a unique day.
[00:00:38] Today we're going to be looking at one of the most amazing aspects of the Christian faith.
[00:00:43] That is perhaps a strange truth, but I hope that in the uniqueness of this morning we can all sense the love of Jesus and his church for his world.
[00:00:56] And so I want us to pick up where we left off last Sunday with the hymn of praise at the end of Romans 11. Let me read this over us again.
[00:01:06] Oh, the depth of the riches and the wisdom and knowledge of God. How unsearchable are his judgments. How inscrutable his ways. For who has known the mind of the Lord or who has been his counselor or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid for from him and and through him and to him are all things to him be glory forever. So last week we considered the fact that our God has all knowledge, all wisdom, all riches, all power, all mercy. God is the uncaused cause of everything. Remember, he's the one necessary being. And this morning we are going to see that if you are a Christian, the God of all things has given you something supernatural that he wants you to use for him.
[00:02:06] There is something placed in you by the power of God for the mission of God.
[00:02:15] It's a serious stunning power truth. But still, we're going to begin with Spider Man.
[00:02:24] Right now, like the 15th Spider man of Spider man movie of my lifetime is in theaters.
[00:02:31] I haven't seen it.
[00:02:33] I don't need to see it without seeing it.
[00:02:36] I bet Spider man uses his supernatural strength and web producing wrists to swing from skyscrapers and powerfully crush the the enemies of justice. Saving the city from certain destruction at the hand of evildoers.
[00:02:52] Am I right?
[00:02:53] I thought I might be right.
[00:02:56] I'm sure that's what happens. And I'm also sure that the reason hundreds of millions of people go to these movies is that deep down there's a part of us that wishes it were true.
[00:03:14] And it is.
[00:03:18] What God's word is going to lead us to today is an Understanding that the real world is actually not very dissimilar at all.
[00:03:29] Church, this is a reality.
[00:03:32] We as people who have a relationship with God through the work of Jesus have absolutely been given supernatural power for a world changing purpose. That's what we get to remember and believe today. We have been given supernatural power for a world changing purpose. So I'm primarily speaking to Christians today and I want you to see four things that the God of all things makes true in in you. Beginning with this. You are supernaturally gifted.
[00:04:12] If you're a Christian, you have a supernatural gift. You have been given supernatural power. That is what it is.
[00:04:23] Look at verse 4 of 1 Corinthians 12.
[00:04:28] Now, there are varieties of gifts, but the same spirit. And there are varieties of service, but the same Lord. And there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. What we're talking about here is spiritual gifts given by and empowered by the God of the universe. The God of infinite knowledge and wisdom and riches and power places expressions of his power in his people, in the lives of the people that he rescues.
[00:05:04] He empowers them all in everyone.
[00:05:08] If you're a Christian, you are supernaturally gifted. As you sit in your seat right now, look around. Seriously, everybody, just look around.
[00:05:18] Just look at the people around this room.
[00:05:22] God's word is so clear that you are surrounded by regular people with supernatural power.
[00:05:32] First Corinthians, Ephesians, Romans, first Peter, they all teach this. I hope then you are wondering what kind of power we're talking about.
[00:05:42] And I'm happy to tell you that we don't actually know the whole of the gifts. The Bible teaches us in First Peter 4 that spiritual gifts are expressions of God's varied grace.
[00:05:53] Because there is no way to exhaust God's grace. There's no way to exhaust exhaustively categorize God's gifts. But he gives us so many examples in Scripture to help us think about how he empowers his people supernaturally. For example, the end of First Corinthians 12 says this. This is amazing. Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating and various kinds of tongues.
[00:06:30] What?
[00:06:31] Hold on.
[00:06:32] I promise I'm happy to teach about tongues. I'm sure I will at some point I have before. Please don't let that be that gift. Be the day, the distraction that keeps you from where we're going. Because we're going somewhere super practical.
[00:06:47] And we don't actually need someone to speak in tongues at church.
[00:06:52] And Paul, the writer of Corinthians agrees.
[00:06:56] In fact, Paul said explicitly two chapters later, watch this, that in church, I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to Instruct others than 10,000 words in a tongue. So that just put that to the side. Right now what I do want us to focus on is the fact that First Corinthians 12 gives us one of several awesome lists found in Scripture of supernatural gifts, powers that are at work in the body of Christ. On screen, there's going to be a list of many of the spiritual gifts from multiple places in the Bible. And remember, this isn't everything. This just helps us think in the right direction, that our hearts go in the right direction about the power that God gives his people.
[00:07:42] Administration. Some of you have it. I know people that have it. Apostleship. That's often understood as the gift of starting things or breaking new ground. Discernment, evangelism, exhortation, faith, giving, healing, helps, hospitality, knowledge, leadership, mercy, prophecy, or preaching, serving, shepherding, teaching, wisdom.
[00:08:11] Those are examples of supernatural powers that God gives his people for his purposes. Now, a couple of caveats, important caveats. One, I'm sure you noticed that many of the spiritual gifts. Will you put that list back up? Many of the spiritual gifts are actually the supernatural power to do things every Christian should be doing anyway.
[00:08:35] Every Christian should discern at some level.
[00:08:39] Some have the special power of discernment. All Christians are equipped to be evangelists.
[00:08:45] Some have supernatural evangelism power. We've seen it all followers of Jesus are to have faith and to give encouragement. But some are especially prepared to be awesome at it. We've all experienced this in the body of Christ, whether we know it or not. That leads to my second important caveat. We, which is this. Hear me.
[00:09:04] Don't stress too much about whether or not you know what your exact spiritual gift is, because we don't have the full list. You may never fully know.
[00:09:17] The point is, you need to believe that the Spirit of God wants to work through you, whether or not you have a label for what it is. Because every Christian is supernaturally gifted by God. You have supernatural giftedness.
[00:09:37] That's amazing. At the end of the book of Luke, after Jesus resurrected from the dead, he's about to have his disciples start his church, start his mission. He said this and behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you.
[00:09:53] But stay in the city until you are clothed in power from on high Jesus said to the disciples that he was going to send his spirit to clothe them in power, and they just had it on day one of the church.
[00:10:11] In verse 14 of Acts 2, Peter uses the spiritual gift of preaching that he just got in verse four of Acts two.
[00:10:21] And he preached a sermon and 3,000 people had their eyes open to their sinfulness and to Jesus desire to rescue them. What we're talking about this morning is not power that you earn, it's power that you are. Every Christian is individually clothed in.
[00:10:39] I told you guys a few weeks ago that I was going to get a cowboy hat, and it has happened.
[00:10:48] Come on now.
[00:10:51] So this hat is named after Tyler, Texas. So it made it real easy to choose.
[00:10:57] I can't wear it right now because obviously it's not felt hat season, which I learned after I bought it and wore it.
[00:11:07] I also decided that I needed boots.
[00:11:14] Come on, guys.
[00:11:18] So I have now been in my house clothed in cowboy gear.
[00:11:28] I'm still not a cowboy.
[00:11:31] I cannot ride a horse.
[00:11:34] I cannot rope a steer. And I'm not even sure that's the phrase you're supposed to use.
[00:11:41] My point is, please nobody steal my boots.
[00:11:45] I haven't actually worn them yet outside of my house.
[00:11:51] Also, please nobody judge my hat etiquette. I'm really trying.
[00:11:58] Being clothed in cowboy attire did not make me a cowboy.
[00:12:05] But being clothed in the power of God does just make you supernaturally powerful.
[00:12:12] God gives his power by his grace to us.
[00:12:21] There are a couple of spiritual gifts that I believe I have had for a long time.
[00:12:25] One of them is preaching, speaking on behalf of God through His Word.
[00:12:31] I still remember preaching my first sermon at 19 years old. And it wasn't good.
[00:12:39] And God made it good.
[00:12:43] You know what I'm talking about. So many of you.
[00:12:47] I hadn't had a preaching class. I still hadn't read a lot of the Bible.
[00:12:51] I was so nervous, I thought I was going to be sick.
[00:12:55] And I shared what I had learned that week.
[00:13:00] And God spoke to his people anyway.
[00:13:04] It's God's power.
[00:13:07] He can make a cowboy out of a cowboy hat.
[00:13:13] I believe I have the gift of faith even before I knew to call it that.
[00:13:19] When I was 15, still trying to make sense of Christianity, I asked my dad to pray with me. And I asked Jesus to save me and to help me never doubt again. And my dad told me that he saw evidence of the work of God in my Life. And by 17, I didn't really understand how anyone else could not be believe.
[00:13:40] That's still, how that's still true for me.
[00:13:42] The God of the Bible makes sense of the world. And when I serve Jesus with preaching or share the faith that is his, there's nothing like it.
[00:13:56] And I'm really just giving you my spiritual gifts testimony because I want you to know that it's such a joy get to get to function in the power that God clothes us in. So many of you have experienced this as God has clothed you in mercy or leadership or encouragement or administration or something you've never been able to quite fully articulate.
[00:14:27] But as you serve Jesus, you found there is nothing on earth like being used by God in in the power that he clothes us in. You don't even have to know what it is today. You may, maybe you've been functioning in your spiritual gift for six decades or you've known what spiritual gifts are for six minutes.
[00:14:48] If you're a Christian, you have been given given supernatural power for a world changing purpose. It's one of the ultimate joys in life. And that purpose is what takes us to the second thing for us to see. First, you are supernaturally gifted. And second, you, you are gifted for God's mission.
[00:15:09] The significance of our supernatural giftedness goes far, far beyond ourselves. Look at verse 7 of First Corinthians 12.
[00:15:17] To each is given the manifestation of the spirit for the common good. How amazing. You are spiritually gifted for the common good. Some Bibles translate that phrase for the benefit of.
[00:15:32] And being gifted by God for the common good means two things. First, it means we are empowered for one another, for the good of one another. First Peter 4 says, as each has received a gift, use it to serve one another.
[00:15:49] You have a gift for each other to serve one another, to love one another. The mercy, the leadership, the service, the wisdom that God gives you. Whatever it is, it's for the benefit of the people around you right now.
[00:16:03] Which means if you are not serving with your gift, the body misses out. As we saw in verse 27 of First Corinthians 12.
[00:16:13] It describes the church as a body and we function together, each person doing his or her part for the health of the body that God has put and is putting together for his mission of throughout his world. Which reminds us of this common good being much bigger than Grace Community Church. Right?
[00:16:37] You guys knew the mission of God is to reach and love and save the world.
[00:16:44] And that is ultimately what you are a part of when you use the spiritual power that God puts inside of you. Listen to Acts 118. Again, this is Jesus speaking to his followers.
[00:16:53] But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you. And you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth. The power that each of us has received from Jesus is intended to impact Grace community and East Texas and parts of the world that you've never seen and will never be to.
[00:17:16] The body of Christ is intended to be healthy together. And the reach of that body expands so that the world will know that God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him will not perish but have everlasting life. I want to give you four numbers.
[00:17:34] I know you get excited about numbers to help us see that the healthier our body, the healthier God's mission.
[00:17:43] We have supernatural power for God's supernatural global mission, his purpose together. The first number is at least 85, if you can call that a number, at least 85. Right now, just at our campus of Grace, we want to fill at least 85 serving roles between now and the end of the calendar year. I mentioned this a couple of weeks ago.
[00:18:06] We've identified the 85 roles that we think we need the most.
[00:18:14] There's role profiles for each one of them. Where I'm going to try to hire you for free today. That's what's about to happen.
[00:18:22] We actually have opportunities beyond that. 85.
[00:18:26] But the mission is much bigger than 85 people, or even if 200 people across our campus respond.
[00:18:34] Because the healthier our body, the healthier the mission. And the next summer is 1.9 million. There's about 1.9 million people living in the broader East Texas region.
[00:18:44] And a lot of those people who do not have a relationship with God through the finished work of Jesus Christ, even more of those have not been discipled to follow Jesus into his joy and abundant life. You may not know this or you may not think about it very often, but we are already a church trying to reach and disciple. East Texas Grace currently has five campuses.
[00:19:04] We're the old Jacksonville campus.
[00:19:07] Across that commons is Grace Espanol. Across town is University Boulevard. We're up in Lindell in Van. We're one of the biggest churches in each East Texas. And that only matters because that means we have an opportunity to impact our whole region for the sake of Jesus.
[00:19:23] We don't yet know where the need for the next campus might be. But we prepare now.
[00:19:30] We prepare to make this body healthy for one another and for our region to be better equipped when we start A new congregation in a new region that God has given us to reach with the good news.
[00:19:43] You have a gift. And not only does your Jerusalem need it, but so does your Judea, because the next number is 1500. And we could pick so many things in East Texas. But this is on the front of my mind because I was at a fostering collective dinner on Thursday night and learned that there are 1500 kids in the foster system in East Texas right now, and it's more than East Texas can handle.
[00:20:06] There were a ton of people in the room, and the executive director spoke to the families in the room and said that we still need families who will give children a home. A lot of families.
[00:20:17] Then he spoke to churches and he said, churches, your job is to disciple those families.
[00:20:25] That is the beautiful work of the body of Christ, and he has given us his supernatural power for it. Some families in our church have and will say, yes, we will be the families where these kids can have a home.
[00:20:41] And then we all can say yes to being the church where those families and those kids are loved.
[00:20:51] When the foster toddlers show up here, who will use the gift of teaching and the gift of serving so that they know Jesus wants them.
[00:21:04] When struggling foster parents need a living room to sit in and say they're not sure they can make it, who's going to use the gift of shepherding to lead their hearts to the love of God?
[00:21:20] The answer is, you.
[00:21:27] Are what God has given to those families in East Texas.
[00:21:37] You have the power of the spirit of God within you church.
[00:21:41] And the fourth number is 100,000.
[00:21:46] There are about 100,000 people around the world every day who die without a saving relationship with Jesus.
[00:21:52] About 150,000 people approximately each day perish.
[00:21:56] 30% of the world is Christian.
[00:21:58] Roughly 100,000 people made in the image of God die each day and won't spend eternity with him.
[00:22:07] That's hard to talk about, but Jesus has asked us to do something about it, and he has given us supernatural gifts to do something about it.
[00:22:21] Grace has been for a very long time.
[00:22:24] On the screen, you'll see that God has made it so that our church has grace partnered missionaries around the world. Many of those dots represent multiple families in those countries, and we have several preparing now to move to the nations in the next couple of years. But this week, Sandra, who leads our global mission work, told me we need more families who will move to another country because people need to know that Jesus loves them. She said she'd like to send five more families in the next three years.
[00:22:53] And what I want you to think about is that the 85 or the 200 help us be ready for those families.
[00:23:03] You can encourage future missionaries.
[00:23:08] Whatever thing you do, you can serve the young couple that God will send to an unreached people group.
[00:23:19] Sometimes the life changing work of Jesus in the nation starts in the parking lot of the old Jacksonville campus of Grace Community Church through the supernatural giftedness of regular people who get to serve the only God and make him known.
[00:23:41] You have been given supernatural power for a world changing purpose and I'm going to give you an opportunity to say yes in a moment. But first I want to remind us of who this is really all about because it can be easy to forget as God uses us in supernatural ways that we don't deserve. We can still forget that it isn't really about us.
[00:24:06] We are supernaturally gifted.
[00:24:09] But let's remember something so simple. Ultimately we are gifted to represent the love of Jesus.
[00:24:20] You are gifted to give the love of Jesus.
[00:24:25] The way we use our gifts most beautifully is a response to how Jesus used his.
[00:24:33] It probably won't surprise you to learn that Jesus was quite supernaturally gifted. Gifted.
[00:24:40] In fact, Jesus was perfectly spiritually gifted. Colossians 2 tells us that in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily.
[00:24:51] The we have some supernatural powers from God. Jesus has all powers because he is God. Jesus had all the gifts, all the powers, and what did he do with them? How did he use them?
[00:25:07] What did he do? Jesus had wisdom.
[00:25:10] Jesus had knowledge. He healed, he prophesied, discerned, taught. Jesus showed mercy. Jesus led. He had every gift. And what did he do with them?
[00:25:23] He died.
[00:25:26] He gave Himself away.
[00:25:30] Jesus had all the gifts and he used them to die on the cross. Hebrews 12 we look to Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross. Mark 10 for even the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve and to give his life for the ransom for many. I don't know what your gift is and you may not know either. But you have it.
[00:25:58] And it is so that your love can point people to Jesus. Love. We serve one another. We love our community. We share our gifts. We share ourselves with the world around us because we have experienced the love of the Savior who for the joy that was set before him, endured the cross.
[00:26:18] He had all the gifts and he used them to love.
[00:26:23] We have some of the gifts and we use them to share his love. Church, you are supernaturally gifted for God's mission through Jesus love.
[00:26:37] And the sermon is over.
[00:26:40] It's the shortest sermon I've ever preached.
[00:26:45] And as you'll see in a moment, the service is really over. It's going to be different right now because I want to give you a chance to respond in a couple different ways today.
[00:26:57] And here's what we're going to do. First, we are going to take a couple minutes to fill out a serving interest form together.
[00:27:04] You're about to see somebody's gift of administration in place. It was not mine.

[00:27:20] You can scan the QR code on the screen. It's probably easier just to type gcc.org serve now if you already serve, you don't have to do this. And please, in fact, please don't because it'll make our job harder if you filled one of these out a couple weeks ago when I we did that little test in a few ministries. You don't need to fill that out again either.

But first I want to say there's five categories of people in this room today and there is something for each one of you to do. The first category of the people who I've already mentioned are the ones serving. Now I'm looking at some of you, some of you are on multiple ministry teams because we got to work on this.
[00:28:10] So about 30% of our church is in the now group.
[00:28:15] 30% already. Use your gifts for God's mission in beautiful ways. Your job then today is to be praying that God will work in the lives of the nexts, the people who will say yes today all across our campuses, all across our services to serving Jesus with their gifts. And in the next couple of moments, the nows are actually going to welcome the nexts but be praying next.
[00:28:41] That's the people who are going to start today the process of joining a team and using their spiritual gifts, your supernatural power to serve. And we're going to fill out the interest form that is on your phones that is now on the screen very, very legibly. But I'm going to walk you through it.
[00:29:00] We're going to do this together right now. You can start at any time.
[00:29:05] Take your time. It takes two minutes. I did it again this morning. Take your time. First you're going to put in your first name. You know that.
[00:29:13] Then you're going to put in your last name. Hopefully you also know that.
[00:29:17] Then you're going to put in your email address and your phone number. True real contact info. The reason we need this is because on Monday and Tuesday our team is going to follow up with everyone who is interested in using their supernatural gifts. Within 48 hours, someone will contact you through one of those ways.
[00:29:40] Put it in. Just put it in then please. Your birthday. This is not so that we could be ageist necessarily.
[00:29:48] Some roles do have age requirements. We are going to be inviting our students who have gifts for the body to serve. But we're starting a parking lot team and 14 year olds are not driving golf courts through the parking lot.
[00:30:01] 13 year olds will not be the ones leading the prayer team.
[00:30:05] So we need to know age.
[00:30:07] Next, choose your gender because some opportunities are gender specific.
[00:30:15] Now the big one. No. Next, choose your campus. That's the Old Jacksonville campus. Click Old Jacksonville. Thank you guys for doing this. Don't quit.

[00:30:26] Select a ministry area you are most interested in. If you're not sure, that's okay. Pick the one that you have even a little lean to in this moment. And if you have no lean towards anything, click Kids Ministry.
[00:30:42] That's what I'm talking about.
[00:30:47] For so many reasons, Kids ministry is so important. That's for another time on screen. But regardless of what you click, I want you to know you're not making a long term commitment. You're just going to start trying.
[00:30:59] Figure it out. On the screen you're going to see a list of some of the opportunities that we have available right now. And every one of these things that you see on screen has multiple opportunities. I tested this out. If you're in the last four rows and you're my age or older, you cannot read all of these. So please forgive me.
[00:31:19] Look at that list.
[00:31:21] Maybe it'll help you choose a ministry.
[00:31:24] Now again, I want you to be comforted. No one is making a lifelong commitment right now.
[00:31:29] If you do click Kids Ministry, you'll have the opportunity to explore how you could serve kids and families in our church. You'll have the opportunity to ride along with current leaders in the ministry to see what it's like. If you end up on a different ministry team, that's great. Use your gifts to serve the body and his purposes around the world.
[00:31:49] But pick one where you might have the most passion as a good first step. Now everybody got it.

[00:32:00] Again. This is somebody's. Actually this is Megan Taylor's gift of administration. She told me to tell you that if it doesn't turn blue. It will not go through.

[00:32:13] Now in just a moment, it's gonna, we're gonna do something beautiful and we are going to spread around this campus as ministry teams and I'll give you a little instructions in a moment.
[00:32:25] We're going to gather briefly with the team that you're already on or the thing that you just clicked for a time of prayer and to talk for a minute, a minute about getting people plugged into the body.
[00:32:37] But before we do that, let me speak to the other three categories.
[00:32:43] Not everybody got out your phones.
[00:32:46] That's okay.
[00:32:49] As we filled out that form, some of you are in the not yet category.
[00:32:55] Some of you have gifts, but right now is not the time. Some of you are taking care of aging parents and it's consuming your life. Some of you have twin 6 month olds and just getting out of the house feels supernatural.
[00:33:10] If you are a not now, this is your church.
[00:33:14] Please let us serve you in this season and you can serve us in the next.
[00:33:21] If you're a not yet. As we gather in a moment with these ministry teams to pray, will you still gather and pray? It's not the time to serve, it's still the time to pray.
[00:33:33] Pick any ministry that is important to you and partner in prayer or in the back. Right. Our senior pastor Doug is going to be with the group's leaders.
[00:33:43] He would be a great group to go to as we pray for God to empower our church for his mission here and around the world. We also have no longers.
[00:33:58] This category is beautiful.
[00:34:01] There are people in our church who no longer have the strength to physically serve in the ways that I just put up on screen.
[00:34:08] I saw many of them in the eight o' clock service.
[00:34:13] I it's the only place I cried in the last service too.
[00:34:18] Before I was born, they were serving this church.
[00:34:23] Thank God that we get to part 100 people in the 70s serving one another and now we get to have this.
[00:34:32] But if you no longer have the physical strength to disciple a toddler, you still have the gift of prayer.
[00:34:41] Will you also go to a ministry team and join us in praying that God will empower our church for his mission?
[00:34:49] And last, we have the newbies.
[00:34:52] Oh man, the newbies. Some of you, this is your first Sunday or your second Sunday.

[00:35:00] If that's you, maybe you are ready to use your gifts in a ministry. That's awesome. Go there. Maybe not, but if you'd be comfortable joining Us for prayer. That would be so great.

[00:36:23] We're going to finish this morning in a messier way, spreading out as many teams of one body, all praying that God will use the gifts he gave us to help people know the love of Jesus. So if you're going to gather with the kids team for any of the reasons I just said, they're going to be back there.
